Wi-Fi plays a starring role at Small Cells Americas


Small Cells Americas, a 9-year-old event that takes place each fall in Dallas, Texas, highlighted a carrier Wi-Fi track on its agenda for the first time last year. This year, Wi-Fi was a dominant theme throughout the event as LTE-U, voice over Wi-Fi and heterogeneous networks were all major topics of discussion.


“A lot of CIOs get hetnets now,” said AT&T’s Gordon Mansfield, former chair of the Small Cell Forum. Mansfield said that in the past, AT&T talked to enterprise customers about “bolting Wi-Fi onto cellular.” Now the conversation is reversed, he said, because companies would rather think about “bolting cellular onto Wi-Fi.”


Mansfield said that VoWi-Fi is working well on AT&T’s network, including VoLTE handoffs. The carrier recently signaled its intent to launch VoWi-Fi soon by asking the Federal Communications Commission to grant it a waiver to offer the service without support for hearing-impaired customers.


VoWi-Fi gives AT&T the opportunity to offer enterprises Wi-Fi for most parts of a venue, supplementing with small cells for the most congested or mission-critical areas. Mansfield said companies are more willing to share costs with AT&T in these types of deployments than in expensive distributed antenna systems.


VoWi-Fi also holds huge promise for rural carriers, which have less spectrum than the nationwide operators. Nathan Sutter, director of network operations and engineering at Nex-Tech Wireless, told a panel that his company would like to rely on Wi-Fi more, but that most customers are not willing to set up Wi-Fi calling on their phones.


“Until there’s no interaction required, we’ll get at most 5-10% of users doing this,” he said. “Every new smartphone comes with a manual, but most users leave it in the box.” He added that Hotspot 2.0, which enables seamless connectivity to enabled access points, is still a long way off for rural America, where he said people are slower to updgrade both smartphones and Wi-Fi hot spots.


Sutter said that he is unsure about the value proposition for Wi-Fi-first mobile offers, but there are plenty of believers in this model. This week mobile virtual network operator FreedomPop said it has received funding from Intel Capital to launch a Wi-Fi first smartphone next year.


Vendors that support the carriers are pivoting to support connectivity in unlicensed spectrum. Earlier this year, InterDigital spun off a company called XCellAir to help operators use software to manage small cells. Within a few months, XCellAir had changed its focus and now bills itself as “the unlicensed spectrum expert,” offering remote management solutions for Wi-Fi access points.


LTE-U

The move to leverage unlicensed spectrum has mobile operators and their chip suppliers looking at ways to integrate LTE into the unlicensed bands. At Small Cells Americas, many attendees shortened their lunch breaks to watch a Broadcom demonstration of LTE in unlicensed spectrum. The chipmaker showed a throughput rate of 270 megabits per second with LTE and Wi-Fi sharing spectrum, versus 250 megabits per second with Wi-Fi alone.


While many members of the cellular industry were converging on Dallas for Small Cells Americas, a number of their counterparts who make and test Wi-Fi equipment were in Palo Alto, Calif., for a Wi-Fi Alliance workshop. The Wi-Fi Alliance is also testing spectrum sharing for LTE and Wi-Fi, and is urging the FCC to wait for its test results before authorizing any LTE-U equipment.

Analyst Angle: Wi-Fi will be at the heart of Dubai Smart City


During the Wi-Fi Global Congress in San Jose, California, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Paul Taylor, manager business development & Wi-Fi services at United Arab Emirates-based service provider du, to discuss the drivers behind the recent carrier Wi-Fi initiatives.


Public Wi-Fi has been around for years now; what is the situation in Dubai?


Within just decades Dubai has evolved from not much more than a strip of desert and sleepy fishing village into a bustling metropolis and one of the world’s most modern cities. Dubai has recently won the bid to host the World Expo 2020, with the theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’. The spread of public Wi-Fi is a key aspect of the Dubai Smart City Initiative, which aims to make Dubai one of the world’s most connected and sustainable cities. Wi-Fi represents one building block upon which the smart city can evolve to support all sorts of applications and big data.


We believe seamless connectivity in public places and urban areas is becoming increasingly important in metros, trams, malls, recreational hubs, but also local government offices. We also believe that as a mobile operator, Wi-Fi will enable us to complement and improve indoor data coverage. We call this the Wi-Fi UAE initiative.


What is your timeline for deploying Wi-Fi?


We will be doing site acquisition throughout the next two years and deploying the access points. Those will include both indoor venues but also outdoor in the beaches and parks, with that flagship concept of smart palms which are solar powered, palm–shaped access points which also provide recharging stations. We are also working with the local transportation authority to enable their bus shelters, also known as smart shelters, with Wi-Fi UAE. VoWiFi [voice-over Wi-Fi] is part of our longer term roadmap and we will probably start testing next year.


As a mobile operator, how do you see public Wi-Fi being complementary to mobile services?


Considering Dubai’s climate, a large portion of the population congregates in malls a big part of the year. Dubai has some of the largest malls and indoor venues in the world. The growth in usage and traffic in those indoor locations is exponential. By deploying a Wi-Fi network, we will not only supplement the overall network capacity, but also sell managed Wi-Fi services to the venue owners and help them create a first class wireless experience for their visitors and customers. We will also offer venue owners an ambitious path to better engagement and monetisation of the Wi-Fi experience.


Can you give us examples of those benefits to the venue owners?


Yes. At the basic level, deploying, optimizing and managing those Wi-Fi networks can be quite a headache for the venue owners who are not telecom specialists. By providing managed Wi-Fi services we allow the venue owners to focus on their core business and not worry about wireless technology while providing 1st class Wi-Fi access to their visitors and employees. On the next level, we can use Elitecore’s service management platform to engage with these millions of shoppers and communicate directly with them, which helps both du as a telecom brand but also the venue owners. Big data and analytics range from foot traffic to device usage and becomes a platform to elaborate hyper localised and relevant marketing campaigns which benefit all the stakeholders including the consumers, the retailers and the mall in general.


What about privacy issues?


There is a lot of discussions going in the UAE about privacy issues. Any information about UAE citizens or entities is seen as highly confidential and must be stored within the UAE so cloud services must be based within the country boundaries. We are clearly looking at big data, how to manage it, how to turn it into actionable intelligence to improve decision making. We showcased a number of use-cases, for example sensors placed on public waste disposal bins in order to improve waste management.


What challenges do you expect in the execution phase?


One of the issues is the sheer numbers of access points required to serve so many millions of visitors. The design of the infrastructure and services needs to be resilient to cope with the needs of so many people in one location like the Dubai mall, the world’s largest shopping mall based on total area and with 1,200 shops. There are also some regulatory challenges to overcome, especially in terms of privacy as mentioned previously.


What is your long-term vision for smart cities and Wi-Fi in Dubai and across the emirates?


We are quite bullish on Wi-Fi and so is the government. As indicated earlier with the upcoming World Expo 2020, the government is keen in investing in technologies enabling smart cities and we believe Wi-Fi has a key role to play. The Expo is expected to result in 277,000 new jobs in the UAE, an injection of up to $40 billion into the economy and an influx of over 25 million visitors. Dubai has announced a smart city initiative that will leverage the Internet of Everything to become one of the world’s most connected and sustainable cities with the Expo as the platform for unveiling this vision. It has been estimated that $7-8 billion could be spent on smart city infrastructure within the pillars of life, society, mobility, economy, governance and environment.


Public data available and collected from Wi-Fi network can be analysed, which can help create infrastructure and operational benefits, such as energy or water network efficiency, relief of traffic congestion and improvements to city facilities. It can also identify how people move and live in the cities and suggest solutions accordingly. The use-cases are endless I would say. It is a matter of which ones get priority funding. The government is in the process of evaluating such use-cases and taking a collaborative approach by engaging all stakeholders, from both public and private sectors.


Why did you choose Elitecore’s service management platform?


We have been working with Elitecore for the past four years starting with some core components of our network. From that great relationship and their understanding of our network, it was a natural progression to build on top of that. They have a great time to market record and are flexible, when we had urgent requirements they delivered for us. We put out an official tender for the Wi-Fi monetisation platform and Elitecore won for the reasons mentioned above.


Elitecore’s comprehensive SMP helped us to offer anytime-anywhere connectivity, helping us to rapidly push forward the WiFi UAE initiative in Dubai and across the U.A.E. With the Elitecore platform, we are able to develop business models that both benefit the public and create new monetisation opportunities. We will be able to address our future roadmap with solutions for Mobile Data offload, Wi-Fi Calling, support for Hotspot 2.0 and advanced analytics for monetisation. I want to add that Elitecore SMP modules offered at du include robust and convergent 3GPP AAA, MAP Gateway, PIAP-supported, TRA-compliant, multi-lingual customisable captive portal with branding and advertising capabilities, web self-care, partner settlement, voucher management, policy control and a prepaid rating and charging system. Elitecore provided a monetisation platform including mobile apps for iOS, Android and Windows, an advertisement server and reporting and analytics.

In our conversation with Kashif Hussain, Solutions Marketing Manager at Viavi Solutions (until recently JDSU), we talked of how RAN optimization is changing with the introduction of multi-layered HetNets and the transition to dynamic networks in which the RF environment keeps changing. Networks are becoming more complex, and there is more equipment to optimize.


Kashif told us: “Now with the larger scale, what you cannot do is keep on sending drive-test teams out there. So you need to build in and automate some of the functions.” And you need to move to a real-time approach to testing and monitoring. Kashif added “You also have to do it in a much shorter time frame now, because when customers have to add thousands of cell sites – as opposed to just hundreds back when you had MSC and BSC – they need faster solutions for optimization, deployment, everything.”


Small cells illustrate the challenges that operators face. Kashif told us: “I have deployed the small cell; have I tested and certified each and every link? For example, is my backhaul the problem? Is fiber a problem? Because now you’re connecting all these fiber links between the baseband unit and the radio units. Or is it my RF link? That’s why we need integrated solutions that can take into account the overall network experience, looking at how each and every application is behaving – not just looking at the RF side of it, but taking into account how each and every user is getting the field experience. And based on that, we provide insight to help the customer decide where and how to control the RF, whether to add more neighbors or anything like that.”

Google Project Loon, in partnership with service providers Indosat, Telkomsel and XL Axiata, plan to begin testing delivery of 4G LTE Internet via balloons floating over Indonesia in 2016.


Project Loon Vice President Mike Cassidy, in a corporate blog post, said that only one out of every three Indonesians are connected to the Internet.


“And even though most of their connections are painfully slow, they’re doing some pretty incredible things. Startups like motorcycle delivery service Go-Jek are building impressive adaptations to Indonesia’s unique challenges, while small businesses like fashionable hijab shop Hijup are using the web to redefine marketplaces. Still, a majority of Indonesians don’t have access to the educational, cultural, and economic opportunities of the Internet. That’s why we’re pleased to announce that Indonesia’s top three mobile network operators—Indosat, Telkomsel, and XL Axiata—have agreed to begin testing Project Loon balloon-powered Internet over Indonesia in 2016. These tests represent an important step toward bringing all of Indonesia online.”


Cassidy wrote that the ultimate goal is to provide 4G LTE Internet to 100 million unconnected people in Indonesia.


“Soon we hope many more millions of people in Indonesia will be able to use the full Internet to bring their culture and businesses online and explore the world even without leaving home.”

With 170,000 employees, $46 billion in 2014 revenue and operations in in 170 countries, Huawei’s ICT transformation strategy is based upon providing enterprise, carriers and developers with open, yet integrated, end-to-end network, cloud computing, big data and developer-centric platform solutions.

Having joined Huawei in 1992 and most recently serving in the role of president of enterprise IT products and solutions business unit, which surpassed USD $3.1 billion in revenue, a 27% increase over 2013, according to Richard Fichera, Computer World UK, Zhang is uniquely qualified to integrate Huawei’s expansive line of fixed and mobile broadband access, core network, information technology (IT) and carrier software products into a singular ICT transformation strategy, customized to customer vertical market needs.


After attending the Huawei Developers Congress, I toured Huawei’s carrier showroom and their enterprise showroom. Except for more detailed visions of 5G coupled with actual eLTE deployments, the carrier showroom was more or less what I had previously viewed at various trade shows and during my last Huawei tour in 2010. The enterprise showroom and the developers congress, on the other hand, was an eye opener in terms of the following:


  • The extent of Huawei’s enterprise service, storage, router, switch, chip, module and analytics product offering

  • Huawei’s enterprise software partnerships with SAP and other enterprise database and software application providers

  • Huawei’s commitment to invest US $1billion to build a developer community ecosystem

  • The number of Huawei IoT case studies involving smart city, smart home, public safety, smart plant, healthcare, railway, utility, intelligent infrastructure, and media.

Outlined below is a translated Q&A discussion with Patrick Zhang


What do you expect from this conference? What are the top 3 takeaways you want for the audience?


We see this congress as a platform for sharing success stories, learning solutions opened up by partners and exchanging novel ideas. I hope developers will find opportunities for cooperation at the event. Let’s create more value for our customers.


I think the following three takeaways are critical for participants:


  • Find answers to these questions: How is Huawei building the ecosystem? Specifically, what capabilities has Huawei opened up to developers and how did the company do so? How are these capabilities used? What has this achieved?

  • What support does Huawei provide for developers, from developer application and registration to solution development, testing, certification, go-to-market, and marketing? What is Huawei’s Developer Community like?

  • What cooperation and support policies does Huawei have for partners (i.e., talent development plan, open lab, joint marketing)?

How do you see the developer scene in China? In what ways is it more advanced or still lagging behind?


The developer scene in China has improved significantly over the past few years and Huawei’s opening-up will further contribute to the development landscape.


Are there geographical differences and, if yes, what are they? What do you think accounts for these differences?


North America, Europe, and Asia are quite different in terms of their development stages. It’s quite natural that developers from different places are different too. Factors such as local economic development and societal needs for ICT infrastructure and applications might lead to the differences.


How can Huawei eliminate those differences and facilitate the cross-pollination of best practices?


As an ICT equipment and solutions provider, Huawei has always focused on ICT infrastructure and opened up its innovative and leading ICT capabilities to partners to build an open environment and enablement platform for various business scenarios. By pooling together innovative applications as well as grouping partners who are capable of developing and customizing these applications industry-wide, we aim to better respond to customers’ personalized and differentiated needs with joint innovations.


Where have you seen successes for the carriers where there is collaboration with developers?


Huawei seeks to build an open operations platform that provides a ROADS (Real-time, On-demand, All-online, DIY, and Social) experience for carriers. We aim to help carriers open up their capabilities and aggregate applications by opening up their basic network, communications, billing, and data capabilities. In doing so, we are able to provide smarter pipes for connection and new business opportunities for developers and help carriers make inroads into strategic home and enterprise markets.


Huawei has a proven track record in working with carriers and developers in multiple areas.


  • First, we have been working with carriers in China and abroad to build a cloud ecosystem.

  • Second, to apply SDN and NFV, we also need an ecosystem, which is a hot topic among global carriers.

  • Third, as carriers possess high-quality Big Data, how can they make full use of the huge amounts of data without breaching user privacy?

  • Fourth, as carrier networks primarily connect people for the time being, how can carriers build an IoT ecosystem to enable connections between things? How can they open up their existing capabilities in communications, QoS, bandwidth management, and location? All these are strategic areas where carriers and developers can work together.

How has such collaboration led to win-win and revenue opportunities for the carriers and developers?


Huawei has partnered up with over 2,000 developers. Thanks to the partnerships, carriers have become more competitive as they are able to meet customers’ personalized and differentiated needs. We plan to create a market worth over US$100 billion by 2020 for these partners.


How about competition with OTA providers? What are your thoughts? How to narrow the gap between carriers you serve and such OTA providers?


Due to long-term large investments in ICT infrastructure, carriers are way more competitive than OTA providers in terms of in communications, QoS, bandwidth management, location, and Big Data in telecom networks.


Huawei has always focused on ICT infrastructure, which enables us to offer E2E ICT solutions. By opening up product and solution capabilities in areas such as basic networks, mobile security, and IT infrastructure, we aim to help developers innovate more quickly and easily, thus facilitating carriers’ strategic transformations.


With its leading products and technologies, Huawei gives partners a competitive edge by helping carriers further develop and monetize their networks and data to bridge the gap between carriers and OTA providers. I’ll elaborate on this:


  • First, we have attractive market and customer bases worldwide.

  • Second, Huawei possesses competitive ICT products.

  • Third, Huawei opens up the core technologies and capabilities of these products to developers, which they find very attractive.

  • Fourth, Huawei will help developers better leverage the capabilities opened up by Huawei in areas such as processes, technological support and community experience sharing. We will even use our customer base to help our partners develop their solutions and increase their market share.

  • Fifth, Huawei provides developer marketing funds to support the partnership building and marketing activities of developers.

As a leader in the global telecom equipment market, Huawei helps carriers connect billions of people and tens of billions of devices. To build a developer ecosystem, Huawei will open up its 6,000 channels and representative offices in 170 regions worldwide to its development partners. In addition, Huawei will invest 5% of its sales revenue (approx. US$200 million this year) to help our partners expand the market.


We plan to create a market worth over US$100 billion by 2020 for developers.


Which area do you think holds the most promise for OpenStack-based development? Why?


OpenStack is an enabler for open and standard cloud infrastructures. It offers high interoperability and scalability. I am optimistic about its applications in enterprise cloud data centers and telecom clouds. Huawei is the top contributor to OpenStack development in the telecom field.


In what way do you think B2B technology vendors play a positive role in the developer community? For instance, what do you think of Huawei’s role and how the company has made a difference in augmenting the cause?


Huawei defines “Partners+ICT” as its developer ecosystem strategy to jointly build a Better Connected World and win infinite business opportunities. As an ICT equipment and solutions provider, Huawei has always focused on ICT infrastructure and opened its innovative and leading ICT capabilities to its partners. In doing so, Huawei intends to build an open environment and enablement platform for various business scenarios to aggregate innovative industry applications. Furthermore, Huawei aims to achieve joint innovation by working with partners with the capabilities to develop and customize innovative applications.


Huawei’s long-term focus on ICT infrastructure combined with its partners’ deep understanding of different business scenarios and customer needs will surely produce win-win results.


As for application developers, they will be able to create more value and gain more benefits by using Huawei’s highly recognized open platforms.


As for Huawei, by working with application developers, the company will more easily be able to meet customers’ personalized needs. By providing platforms, Huawei helps to create sound industry ecosystems. These ecosystems will then help Huawei obtain more opportunities for cooperation and boost the sales of its box products. On this basis, Huawei’s business model will surely continue to change. Following the rollout of cloud services, Huawei’s equipment sales model has gradually changed into one based on software and services, including licenses, revenue sharing, pay as you use (PAYU), annual use fees, and subscriptions.


With cloud and the billions of additional connections expected through the IoT, how will Huawei engage with the developer community?


Over the next five years, Huawei will invest 1 billion US dollars to establish a developer enablement platform to achieve joint innovation with developers.


Huawei will establish a developer-centric platform called eSDK based on the LEADS concept. LEADS stands for Lab as a Service, End-to-end, Agile, Dedicated, and Social.


Huawei will establish seven open labs in Chengdu, Suzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, Germany, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, thus providing development and verification environments for ecosystem developers.


Over the next three years, Huawei will invest 200 million US dollars in cloud ecosystems and train 10,000 Huawei-certified experts specializing in cloud computing.


In the enterprise market, Huawei will open its 170+ rep offices and 6,000 channels to all its partners and invest 5% of its sales revenue (approx. US$200 million this year) to help our partners expand the market.


Where do you see Huawei’s developer community evolving based on where it is today, and are you satisfied with its current progress?


As both a developer community and an open platform, Huawei’s eSDK will include all its development resources (such as ecosystems, open ICT capabilities, documentation, tools, remote labs), success stories about its partners, and a communication platform for developers. Huawei’s developer community is an interactive platform for developers to learn about open capabilities, download related documents and tools, share experiences and discuss development problems, and market their solutions.


The complete technical support system consists of an online community and offline activities:


  • Online activities: Establish a universal developer community, publish the latest news, technical documentation, provide success stories relating to Huawei’s open capabilities, and create a space for developers to communicate with Huawei experts on joint innovations.

  • Offline activities: Hold the Huawei Developers Congress on an annual basis, as well as other offline activities such as developers’ contests, technical salons, and specific training sessions.

What are the gaps in skill sets of the B2B technology developer community? How do you think schools or curricula can close these gaps? Is Huawei actively working to bridge such gaps?


The main gap is a lack of practice. To bridge this gap, Huawei plans to establish the eSDK developer-centric platform based on the LEADS concept, which, as described previously, stands for Lab as a Service, End-to-end, Agile, Dedicated, and Social.


In addition, Huawei will spearhead initiatives such as building open labs and providing technical training to help improve developers’ practical skills.


  • Huawei will establish seven open labs in Chengdu, Suzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, Germany, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, thus providing development and verification environments for ecosystem developers.

  • Over the next three years, Huawei will invest 200 million US dollars in cloud ecosystems to train 10,000 Huawei-certified experts specializing in cloud computing.

Mr. Patrick Zhang is President of the Marketing and Solutions Department, Products and Solutions, at Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. He brings more than twenty years of experience in the ICT industry to this role. Since joining Huawei in 1992, Mr. Zhang has held a number of management positions across various Huawei business units. He has been appointed as Director of the Switch Business, General Vice President of the Technical Support Department, President of the Fixed Network Product Line, President of the Wireless Product Line, General Vice President of Latin America, and President of the Marketing and Solutions Department of Huawei’s Enterprise Business Group. Mr. Zhang holds a Master of Electronic Engineering degree from Fudan University.
